Burnett Jones ( website | myspace ) Burnett Jones is not the name of the band’s front man, but is rather the last names of the band’s core members. The band is made up of siblings Wade and his sister Dionne Burnett and lead guitarist Chad Jones and together they form the core of the group. Poodie Locke describes the group as a “kick-ass family band.” The band’s debut CD, titled Twist Off, is a fun loving collection of tunes that includes seven originals from the group, and three covers including tunes by Mick Jagger and Willie Nelson. Pauline Reese adds some great harmonies on the CD that, when combined with Dionne ’s vocals, gives it a softer quality which only adds to the fun, honky-tonk style that the CD is built upon. John Owens (Kevin Fowler’s management team) described the CD as “making him want to go out, drink a cool one, and dance the night away.” The band is also donating a portion of the proceeds from the sales of the CD to Rexanna’s Foundation in order to support a cure for lung cancer.
Tyler McCumber Band ( website | myspace ) The George West, Texas sensation of the Tyler McCumber Band continues to make its presence known in Texas Music with the recent Texas Music Award for producer of the year with Mike McClure at the control board for Tyler’s debut album Catch Me. McCumber and his band continue to win fans with the superb CD and live shows that are a hit with everyone. The debut single on the CD is also being played on several discriminating radio stations in Texas and Oklahoma. Tyler was featured on the nationally syndicated The Back Porch Radio Show that had over 6 million listeners in April. The show took in calls from all over the country while the CD tracks were played for the large live audience during a CD profile and interview segment. Tyler continues to take the recent attention in stride and works during the week as a horse ferrier (a person who puts shoes on horses) and tours on the weekends.
Zack Walther and the Cronkites ( website | myspace ) With the upcoming release of their live CD in summer of 2007, Zack Walther and the Cronkites are riding a high of great gigs and enduring buzz. The band is on tour and opening for the likes of Jack Ingram and Stoney LaRue. The schedule is full and more and more fans are being introduced to Zack and his great band. The live CD is said to capture a vibe of live CDs of the 70s when live records really meant a live record. The Cronkite’s recent project titled, Death of Rodger Vol. 1 was the base of the songs for the live record, but the record also will contain some new material and great covers that fit the band and yet are not the normal songs covered in Texas bands.
Post Oak Savannah ( website | myspace ) This Texas Jam band hails from East Texas and has recently released a selftitled CD that has some great jamming and grooving. Post Oak’s music can only be described as a cross between the Grateful Dead and The Marshall Tucker Band with some Stones and Beatles mixed into a black water stew of serious music. The CD contains 13 tracks from the band and includes some great country, R&B, and classic rock all on the same record. Post Oak’s coolness is their ability to groove in and out of different styles without leaving a listener behind. Jam bands are always fun but consistency is usually hard to pull off. Post Oak Savannah is good enough to pull it off and pull it off well. The record and the band are well worth checking out.
Mark Monaco ( website | myspace ) Mark Monaco is one of the best performers in Texas. His high-energy shows and brand of country rock are truly unique and genuine. No one walks away from a Mark Monaco show with any doubt that what they had just witnessed was a guy and a band who gave it their all. Mark has two CDs to his credit and this summer will go into the studio to cut a third. Mark is a super musician and lays down most of the tracks himself playing all of the instruments and parts. He also self-produces his records. Most musicians/producers will not attempt such a challenge. The old adage is to make others’ records and let others make yours. However, Mark pulled it off with his first two records titled American Highway and Alternate Frequency that were released in 2001 and 2005 respectively. As for the third record, the jury is still out on who will be at the controls. However, if Mark does decide to take on the task for a third time, if his first two projects are any indication of what we can expect, it is likely that Monaco fans will not be disappointed.
